What becomes of you and whether you survive won't be our responsibility. Do you have anything to say?"

"God damn all of you!" Garcia's voice throbbed with hatred.

"Return him to the jail cabin for the present," Ernie told the guards. "Several of us will go up to the heights today and find a cave that's suitable. By tomorrow well be able to stock it with food and firewood, and then Garcia will be escorted there. Is there anything you want to add to what I've said, gentlemen?"

Lee Blake looked first at Cathy and Ginny, then turned to the prisoner. "Only this," he said. "Garcia, you're being banished permanently from our company. I urge you not to come back here because our sentries will be imder orders to shoot you on sight."

"What's more," Whip added in a deceptively quiet tone, "they'll shoot to kill."

Justice had been done, but Cathy felt no satisfaction as she left the hall. Ginny Dobbs had a faint smile on her face as she departed, but as Tilman Wade watched her, he could not guess what she was really thinking. It was diflScult to believe her desire for vengeance was so great that she had no pity, no sympathy for the man who, no matter what he had done, had been her companion on the trail for many weeks.
